SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA

In Las Vegas and around the country are multiple reports of medical problems associated with the legal sale of a synthetic substance sold as “herbal Incense”. This substance is sold in smoke shops under the names of Spice, King Krypto and other brands. These synthetic substances are metabolites of delta 9- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active component of marijuana. The compound was named after Dr. John W. Huffman, a chemist at Clemson University and appropriately identified as JWH-018.

Whereas marijuana or cannabis is actually a partial agonist at the cannabinoid receptor sites, JWH-018 is a full agonist with an affinity five times greater at these sites. The experience of smoking this chemical is far more intense than marijuana because of the significantly greater potency. According to various reports, a small amount can produce visual distortions, extreme panic attacks, and a marijuana-like “high”.

The toxic effects of use of these substances are consistent with high dosages of marijuana. Despite the fact that these substances are usually labeled with the warning, “Not for Human Consumption”, the intent by the seller and the buyer appear to be irresponsible and potentially dangerous. It is of serious concern that these substances are used by adolescents with increased frequency. According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, this compound has been banned in many European countries and many states in the U.S.
