A recent study by Dr. Michael S. Levy, founder and medical director of The Center for Addiction Medicine in Las Vegas, explained the increase in substance abuse and addictive disorder since the events of Sept. 11.

Levy said that the emotional impact and uncertainty caused by the terrorist attacks subjected a great deal of Americans to stress, which, in turn, made many more people vulnerable to substance abuse and addiction relapse.

The study reported that the increased risk of substance abuse arose as a result of the body’s natural response to stress, or in this case, post traumatic stress disorder.

“However, some people experience prolonged effects that disrupt their ability to function on a day-to-day basis. These individuals are especially vulnerable to drug and alcohol abuse to cope with unpleasant emotions,” Levy said.
